Leader Standard Work can be a great methodology. Many people don't know the difference between that and an audit, any more than they know the difference between an audit and an assessment. However, it has to be done right. It's more than creating checklists. Even when done right, it takes at least a month to get used to and not everyone has that patience. If you get it wrong, it will take longer.

Here are some of the tips I have for creating such methods in IndustryWeek:

Mark,

Sorry to comment so long after your original post, but I wanted to follow up. Your words were timely and prompted me to begin driving leader standard work in my own organization.

The results have been slow but positive. It has significantly raised the level of understanding among the management team and resulted in actual action as opposed to generating audit reports.

To Rosanna's question, I thought about how to measure the effectiveness also. Ultimately the team decided the best thing was to have the value stream managers report regularly to the lean steering committee on what they've *learned*. This facilities coaching and mentoring, and I think it is more valuable than any metric.

Thanks,
Evan

Great blog.... I'm an active believer in the power of leader standard work. I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on how to measure the effectiveness of leader standard work. My initial thoughts are measuring the number of correction actions and whether or not the issues reappear.

Darn fine logic & commentary Mark, particularly like the dieting analogy. Having just been subjected to an 'external audit' I can't help wonder what could we have unearthed with our adherence to LSW rather than waiting for someone to catch us out!
