Great article Mark. I really like the part on problem solving. I can't tell you how many times I have run across situations where companies (or people responsible for the work) don't expect perfection and accept the "chatter" in the process. Things do not have to be that way, and throwing money at the problem is not always the answer. Taking the time to create problem solvers, and then coach them on how to be more effective is time and effort well spent.

great post and insights. We are actually going through a launch here right now that highlights what you wrote about.

We are highly automated and pretty high speed for what we do. About 1000pcs/hr. We are one piece flow from system to system on this particular product. So when we have a system issue it HURTS until we fix it. Our approach is absolutely to learn and understand how these systems work so that our approach to solutions is permanent. We are taking a little more time on the front end of this production life cycle so that down the road we can react quickly. More importantly, the solutions that we are putting in place right now, are building strength into the system.

There is no "magic". We seek to understand true root cause. We never guess or bias our solutions. Scientific process is at the forefront.

It's been a great project. Super low waste production with high output rates and the team actually seems to enjoy solving the issues as they come up.
